Argument Essay
Have you ever read a books title or looked at the covers picture, and thought this book isn’t for you nor others? Well, according to some people, Young Adult books include dark information. Some parents allow their child to read YA books with that information. But other parents don't think its acceptable, and that is the right choice. Even though, most who read YA books, are young adults, they still shouldn't read dark books.
According G.P. Taylor he states “I wrote the Vampyre Labyrinth, it came out, I hadn’t really read it when i wrote the book and people, who were reading it and reviewing it, were saying, this is the most frightening thing that has ever been written for kids. I have changed my mind:I think children's literature has gone too far.” Taylor is absolutely correct. There should most definitely be a limitation to books. Not everyone is mature enough to read these kind of books. There would be no way, that a parent is going to show their child a darkened book.
Amy Freeman is a person who believes YA literature is too dark. When she attended Barnes & Nobles to get a book for her child, she stated “nothing, not a thing, that I could imagine giving my daughter. It was all vampires and suicide and self-mutilation, this dark, dark stuff.” Unfortunately, she left empty-handed. Bad contents are not things kids should read. The details that the books give, can influence some kids to try things. Some YA books may be acceptable for some teens or kids, but it isn’t for everyone.
According to Meghan Cox Gurdon, she doesn’t think YA books should be constrained. “Reading about homicide doesn’t turn a man into a murder; reading about cheating on exams won't make a kid break the honor code.” Meghan Cox Gurdon states. Gurdon thinks that young adult books won't influence kids. In many ways, she is precise. Young Adult books aren’t always bad. Kids are going to try and research/read things they are not supposed to. That includes violence and other dark details. Children watch the news, and the news talks about those type of things. People tried to also ban the dictionary because of the language it includes. That is a bad decision to make because the dictionary is supposed to state what words mean.
In conclusion, not all YA literature can influence kids. But, its still inadequate. Even though it
may not influence everyone, that’s still not commodity they should be reading. YA books shouldn't
be banned, but it should be restrained. If I was in charge of limiting dark books, I would, but would
you let your child be entertained my dark energy?
I like your argument essay; you did a really good job! You used great examples to support your claim and your conclusion was well-written and I like how you ended with a question. Great job!
